David Weinberg with excellent comments on why explicit metadata won’t work: “Bobby Kishore of Microsoft is explaining how to create a KM system without relying on explicit metadata. People don’t like filling out forms and entering metadata explicitly. So, a KM system ought to mine content for metadata. That’s certainly right. But here’s a related question: Why don’t people enter metadata? It’s not simply because it’s a pain in the butt: individual pain for organizational benefit.

This example illustrates how the wealth of readily available data on the web leads to a growing, and often false sense of the relationship between various events. If David hadn’t been able to check the web immediately, he may not have remembered to check the paper later, or may have missed an article about the Japanese earthquake.
